The Montana Route covers a distance of 900 km and takes approximately 9 hours and 50 minutes. This journey takes you through unbeatable destinations like Claresholm, Glacier National Park, Whitefish, and Standpoint.

Alternatively, the Banff National Park Route, also 900 km, requires around 11 hours and 20 minutes of driving. This scenic route includes destinations such as Banff, Golden, Revelstoke, and Colville, which makes it a must for winter sports fans.

Best road trip route from Calgary to Spokane

While both the Montana Route and the Banff National Park Route showcase breathtaking natural wonders, each one is unique with its own experiences and types of destinations.

The Montana Route takes you on a picturesque detour around the Rocky Mountains. Be prepared to make frequent stops to admire and photograph the scenic landscapes and snow-capped peaks.

How to drive from Calgary to Spokane

Montana Route

Begin your drive from Calgary, heading south on Highway 2 towards Claresholm. This leg of the trip offers a smooth drive with rolling prairies stretching out on either side.

After a brief stop in Claresholm, continue south and cross into the United States, heading towards Glacier National Park in Montana, a popular destination for nature lovers and a perfect spot for hiking and photography, especially at St. Mary Lake.

From Glacier National Park, drive west on Highway 2, winding through the dense forests and stunning landscapes of the Kootenai National Forest. Make sure to pause at the Kootenai Falls Suspension Bridge for a breathtaking view of the waterfalls.

You'll soon arrive in Whitefish, a charming town known for the Whitefish Mountain Resort and plenty of outdoor activities.

Continue westward, passing through the picturesque towns of Kalispell and Libby. As you follow the Clark Fork River, explore the Manukau and Kaniksu National Forests, both offering a wealth of wilderness to discover.

Your next major stop after driving west on Highway 2 is Sandpoint in Idaho, a beautiful destination nestled by the lake and surrounded by mountains.

After Sandpoint, head south towards Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, renowned for its stunning lake and downtown. The last stretch of the trip takes you through the scenic beauty of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, before arriving in Spokane.

Banff National Park Route

Start the Banff National Park Route from Calgary, traveling west on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) towards the picturesque town of Canmore. Here, you'll get your first glimpse of the majestic Rocky Mountains.

Continue along the highway west, and soon you'll reach the stunning Lake Minnewanka, a perfect spot for a scenic break.

Further along Highway 1, you enter the heart of the Rockies as you arrive in Banff. This iconic mountain town, nestled within Banff National Park, has plenty of activities, from hiking to hot springs.

From here, drive a short distance to Lake Louise, famous for its turquoise waters and breathtaking mountain backdrop.

Drive westward into Yoho National Park, where you can see natural wonders like the Spiral Tunnels Viewpoint. The route then takes you to Golden, a gateway to outdoor adventures, and across the Golden Skybridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

After Golden, Highway 1 leads you through the Canadian side of Glacier National Park. Experience the rugged beauty of the park before heading towards Mount Revelstoke National Park and the town of Revelstoke.

Here, you can enjoy plenty of winter sports and outdoor activities, including the unique Eagle Pass Heliskiing experience.

As you leave Revelstoke, take Highway 6 South to the Bear Spring Eco Retreat to relax in nature. Then, continue further south, passing through the charming town of Nelson, British Columbia and then towards the United States border.

Once in the USA, continue your drive to Colville in Washington. Here, you'll get to see the gorgeous scenery of Colville National Forest before continuing south on Highway 395 to Spokane.

Best time to go on a road trip from Calgary to Spokane

Spokane, the Lilac City, is a captivating year-round destination, with each season offering its unique charms and activities.

In winter, Spokane transforms into a snowy wonderland, with average temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
