The 790 km road trip from Vancouver to Spokane will take 9 hours and 20 minutes to drive. On the way you can visit Seattle, Leavenworth, Bellingham, Harrison Hot Springs, Kelowna, Fairhaven, Coquihalla Canyon, Myra Canyon and Clayburn Village.

Best road trip route from Vancouver to Spokane

While both the Kelowna and Seattle routes offer breathtaking natural beauty and culturally rich stops along the way, they each have their own unique charms and experiences.

The Kelowna Route, with its picturesque landscapes, takes you along the BC-5, one of the most scenic roads outside of Vancouver. As you travel, you'll encounter two provincial parks, EC Manning and Granby, as well as the Colville National Forest.

A highlight of this route is crossing the stunning Okanagan Lake via the William R. Bennett Bridge, Canada's only floating bridge, just before reaching Kelowna. This route is ideal if you enjoy scenic drives, wildlife, and natural wilderness.

On the other hand, the Seattle Route takes you through awe-inspiring scenery of Washington State. Shortly after departing Vancouver, you'll cross the border into the United States, heading towards the breathtaking North Cascades National Park, which is worth a detour if you have the time.

This route offers spectacular mountain views to the left and the serene beauty of Puget Sound to the right as you approach Seattle. The journey between Seattle and Spokane is equally mesmerising, with sights such as the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

You will also get to visit the Bavarian-style Leavenworth on this route, which is famous for its fantastic Christmas celebrations and cheerful spirit.

How to drive from Vancouver to Spokane

Kelowna Route

Begin your journey on the Kelowna Route from Vancouver, heading east towards the Golden Ears Provincial Park. Next, travel southeast along the Trans-Canada Highway to the Fort Langley National Historic Site.

The trip continues eastward, passing through Tanglebank Gardens and the quaint Clayburn Village. As you travel further east, you'll come across the Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park. Then, stop at the Sasquatch in Harrison Hot Springs for a cosy meal and relaxing activities.

Further along, the route winds through the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park and the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area, offering breathtaking views and outdoor activities.

Transitioning onto BC-97 East, the journey takes you to Kelowna, where you can visit the renowned Mission Hill Winery and enjoy the serene beauty of Okanagan Lake. Further on, you'll get to Myra Canyon, a must-see for its historic railway and scenic vistas.

The last leg of the drive heads across the Canadian/US border into Washington and you will soon reach your destination in Spokane.

Seattle Route

Head south towards the US border. Continuing southward, visit the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley for an aviation history experience. As you proceed along Interstate 5 (I-5), the scenic drive takes you through Skagit Valley, home to the stunning Skagit Valley Tulip Fields.

Further along the interstate, you can explore the historic Fairhaven Historic District, offering a glimpse into the area's past. From here, head into Seattle, where you can visit iconic landmarks like the Space Needle.

Leaving Seattle, travel east on US-2 towards Leavenworth. The charming town of Leavenworth, known for its Bavarian-style architecture, is a wonderful place to stop.

Continuing east, your journey takes you through the captivating landscapes of Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village, followed by the beautiful Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee.

Your last leg to Spokane will take you through diverse landscapes before ending in beautiful Spokane.

Best time to go on a road trip from Vancouver to Spokane

Spokane offers unique experiences throughout the year. With that being said, each season has its own charms and what you can do and see on the way from Vancouver to Spokane will differ according to which season you choose to travel.

In winter, Spokane sees temperatures ranging from the low 20s to the mid-30s Fahrenheit. If you are travelling on the Kelowna Route, be wary of snow and icy conditions, as mountain pass roads may be closed, and driving near Kelowna can be challenging.

For those on the Seattle Route, border crossing is smoother on weekdays, and roads are ‌well-maintained, even in winter. Spokane in winter is a sight to behold, with its snow-covered landscapes and festive atmosphere, perfect for cosy city explorations.

Spring in Spokane brings milder temperatures, typically in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit, ideal for outdoor activities.

On the Seattle Route, May is a bustling month with the Seattle International Film Festival and the Seattle Maritime Festival. In Spokane, the Lilac Bloomsday Run and the Spokane Lilac Festival in May are highlights.

Summer temperatures in Spokane can reach the high 80s, providing perfect weather for exploring Riverfront Park and cooling off at Spokane Falls. The Seattle Route is particularly attractive during this time, with North Cascades National Park being in its prime from mid-June to late September.
